Keeping Your Garage Cooler in The Summer and Fall

Ron Graham • September 5, 2022

If you are like many Bay Area and Greater Sacramento Area home owners, you know our Summer and Fall months can hit triple-digits and stay between 90 degrees and 100+ degrees for days, even weeks.  A garage can get up to 20 degrees hotter than the temperature outside. Here at Graham Garage Doors, we want you to have as much information as possible when it comes to choosing how to improve your overall garage experience.

This information is about more than a hot garage door. It’s also about the interior of a hot garage, which can be very uncomfortable during the summer months. And this is even more important if you have converted your garage into a recreation or office space, or are using it for storage. Additionally, many residents have a 2nd refrigerator located in their garage. Most refrigeration units are designed to operate with ambient temperatures within a reasonable range. Once your garage hits 90+ degrees, that refrigerator is going into double-time to keep things cool inside, drastically reducing its service life.

Do you have a plan for cooling down your garage when the need arises?

The first question you should ask yourself is: Why does my garage heat up?

There are a number of reasons that could cause your garage to feel like you opened a huge oven door. One reason could be if you have a windowless garage or limited ventilation in the garage. Garages without windows that open or some form of adequate ventilation, collect hot air rather quickly. With no ventilation, there is no way for air to circulate through the garage and it heats up as a result. Another top cause of garage warmth could be a lack of insulation on the structure walls and on the garage door itself. Most Garage Doors consume a large portion of interior and exterior space, while many assume insulation is only needed for cold winter weather, it also plays a role in preventing heat from getting into your garage through radiant heat. The location relative to the sun's path of your garage could also be a big factor. Of course, you can't easily change the orientation of your garage, but the direction the Garage Door faces can help determine how much effect an insulated door can make to your overall experience.

Best advice for mitigating garage high temps:

  • Encourage natural ventilation. Consider installing roof and attic vents, which help with passive ventilation. If you are looking for a quick fix, you may also want to check out options like pedestal fans or a powered shop fan to keep air in the garage moving. These solutions are at the top of our suggestions due to their effective results.
  • Get that Garage door insulated, or replaced with an insulated door! Graham Garage Doors installs insulation on most common doors as well as replacement doors with thick foam insulation. This is a VERY effective solution.
  • A weather seal fitted to the full perimeter of your garage door helps to prevent excessive heat from being blown in. If your seal is broken or you have no seal at all, you can expect intense heat to quickly seep into your garage. Don’t let broken or missing weatherstripping cause your garage to unbearably heat up.
  • Install insulation on your exterior garage walls. You can get a double-benefit if you take this time to finish the garage with sheets of OSB or plywood. This will allow you to use those walls for hanging most garage-type items. So much better than hanging items on drywall!
  • Declutter your garage. If you need to use a portion of your garage as storage (as most of us end up doing) keep it minimized and organized. A cluttered and/or full garage traps and retains heat, so don't dismiss an easy fix.
  • Cool your vehicle before parking. If you are able, park your vehicle outside for an hour then pull it inside. The massive amount of heat your vehicle produces is about 100 degrees HOTTER than the outside ambient temperature. So let it cool for a while first.

A practical troubleshooting guide to help homeowners identify why a garage door won’t open or close and when professional repair is needed.

A garage door plays a significant role in the function, safety, and appearance of a home. Over time, parts wear down, mechanisms fail, and homeowners begin to notice issues that raise an important question: Should the garage door be repaired, or is a full residential garage door replacement the better choice? This guide is designed to help homeowners evaluate the condition of their garage door, understand the difference between repair and replacement, and make an informed decision. Whether you live in Sacramento, Folsom, Elk Grove, Roseville, Livermore, or anywhere in the surrounding regions, these considerations apply to a wide range of garage door systems and home styles. Understanding the Difference Between Repair and Replacement Before determining which path to take, it is important to understand what qualifies as a repair versus a replacement. Garage Door Repair typically involves restoring the functionality of existing components. Common repairs include fixing springs, cables, rollers, sensors, tracks, and garage door openers. Repairs address specific problems without replacing the entire system. Residential Garage Door Replacement involves removing the existing garage door and installing a new one. This may include new panels, tracks, hardware, insulation, and upgraded safety features. Replacement is generally recommended when damage is extensive, the door is outdated, or repairs are no longer cost-effective. Signs That Garage Door Repair Is the Best Option Many garage door issues can be resolved through routine or targeted repairs. A repair is often appropriate when the door is structurally sound and the damage is limited to individual components. 1. Operational Noises or Rough Movement Grinding, squeaking, or rattling noises are often early indicators of component wear. These sounds may come from rollers, hinges, springs, or the opener mechanism. If the door still operates reliably but with noise or friction, repair is typically the most efficient solution. 2. Misalignment or Jerky Motion If the door moves unevenly or appears off balance, the issue may relate to the tracks or cables. Realigning the track or replacing the cables is usually sufficient to restore smooth operation. 3. Broken Springs or Cables Springs and cables are high-tension components that bear the weight of the garage door. While a broken spring or snapped cable prevents the door from functioning properly, it does not mean the entire door must be replaced. A professional spring or cable replacement generally resolves the issue and restores full functionality. 4. Issues with Garage Door Opener When the opener fails to respond, hesitates, or struggles to lift the door, the cause may be related to sensors, motor wear, or internal electronics. These issues can often be repaired by resetting the opener, adjusting the sensors, or replacing the opener unit. The door itself may remain structurally sound. 5. Isolated Panel Damage If only one or two panels are damaged and the remainder of the door is in good condition, panel replacement may be possible. This is a cost-effective alternative that preserves the existing door while restoring its appearance and function. When Garage Door Replacement Is the Better Choice There are situations where repairing a garage door is not practical or cost-effective. In these cases, a full residential garage door replacement offers better long-term reliability, improved safety, and a stronger return on investment. 1. Multiple Damaged Panels or Structural Issues Extensive damage to the door’s structure, such as bending, warping, severe dents, or broken panel framing, typically cannot be corrected with simple repairs. When the door’s structural integrity is compromised, replacement ensures safe and reliable operation. 2. Aging Doors Near the End of Their Lifespan Garage doors generally last 15 to 30 years depending on materials, usage, and maintenance. An older door may begin to experience repeated component failures. When a door approaches the end of its expected lifespan, replacement is often more practical than paying for frequent repairs that do not address the underlying age-related wear. 3. Cost of Repairs Exceeds or Approaches Replacement As a general guideline, if the cost of needed repairs exceeds 50 percent of the cost of a new garage door, replacement becomes the more economical choice. A new residential garage door also brings added benefits such as warranty coverage , improved insulation, and enhanced aesthetics. 4. Energy Efficiency Upgrades Older garage doors often lack modern insulation, weather sealing, and noise-reducing materials. A new insulated door can help regulate indoor temperatures, reduce energy costs, and improve comfort, especially in climates with hot summers or cooler seasons. 5. Outdated Appearance A garage door contributes significantly to a home’s curb appeal. Homeowners who are preparing to sell or simply want to update the exterior often choose replacement to modernize the look of their property. Comparing the Costs: Repair vs Replacement While costs vary based on the specific issue, materials, and door size, the following general guidelines can help homeowners understand the differences: Service Type: Repair Typical Purpose: Fixing isolated mechanical issues Cost Consideration: Lower cost, short-term fix Service Type: Minor Part Replacement Typical Purpose: Springs, cables, rollers Cost Consideration: Moderate cost depending on parts Service Type: Opener Repair or Replacement Typical Purpose: Electrical or motor issues Cost Consideration: Varies based on model Service Type: Full Door Replacement Typical Purpose: New panels, insulation, hardware Cost Consideration: Higher cost, long-term investment Understanding these categories helps homeowners weigh whether repeated repairs are delaying the inevitable need for replacement. Evaluating Safety Concerns Safety is an essential factor when deciding between repair and replacement. A malfunctioning garage door poses risks such as: Sudden collapse due to weakened structural components Spring or cable failure under high tension Faulty safety sensors Difficulty opening during emergencies If any part of the door or opener system compromises the safety of your household, replacement or comprehensive repair should be prioritized. How a Professional Assessment Helps the Decision Since 1989, Graham Garage Doors has been serving homeowners across multiple regions with professional evaluations and transparent recommendations. A trained technician can assess: The age and condition of the door The severity and cause of the issue Whether the problem is isolated or part of a larger pattern The expected lifespan of the door after repair Whether replacement offers better long-term value This assessment removes uncertainty and ensures you receive the most practical and cost-effective solution for your home. Local Considerations for Homeowners in the Service Area Homes in areas such as Sacramento, Folsom, Elk Grove, Dublin, Livermore, Roseville, and surrounding communities experience a range of environmental conditions that affect garage door performance. Weather exposure, daily usage, and temperature changes all influence wear and longevity. Understanding these local factors helps homeowners make informed decisions about repair or replacement based on the climate and usage patterns in their region. The Long-Term Benefits of Residential Garage Door Replacement For homeowners who choose replacement, the advantages extend beyond resolving mechanical problems. A new garage door can offer: Enhanced security features Improved insulation and energy efficiency Quieter operation Modern design options Reduced maintenance needs Increased home value and curb appeal These benefits make replacement a strong investment, especially when an older door no longer meets modern performance or safety standards. When to Call for Professional Help If your garage door is showing signs of wear, struggling to operate, or experiencing recurring issues, professional evaluation is the most reliable way to determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate. Attempting to diagnose or fix high-tension components without proper tools and training can lead to serious injury. Professional service ensures accurate diagnosis and safe, effective solutions.
